WHAT IS RFID ?

RFID is an acronym for radio frequency identification.

As this says, RFID is a word used to describe all technologies that use radio waves to identify something.

RFID has been around for a while now and its applications are becoming more and more popular. It has become the access leader taking over from barcodes and magstripes. Its benefits include:

Its contactless, therefore it doesn’t need to be positioned precisely relative to the scanner nor swiped through a special reader.

It has greater durability as a result of being contactless, with less wear and tear on the tag or card.

It offers a greater range of formats and options to the end user, thus servicing there needs better.

The security it offers is higher than barcode and magnetic strip cards.

Industry standards have come together over recent years making the technology more compatible from company to company and country to country.

HOW DOES RFID WORK ?

RFID has 3 parts:

1 A Scanning Antenna.

2 A Transceiver with a decoder to interpret the data.

3 A transponder -the RFID tag or card- which has been programmed with the relevant data.

The scanning antenna and transceiver are usually built into a ‘reader’ to which the transponder -or Tag- is presented. As the reader puts out radio frequency signals, the RF radiation does 2 things;

It enables a means of communicating with the ‘Tag’ and it also provides the RFID Tag with the energy to communicate.

RFID Tags don’t need to contain a power supply of battery and can therefore remain useable for very long periods of time.

RFID tags can be used in a wide variety of circumstances where barcodes or other read technologies are useless.
